The story
Kai Navarro trained in Seoul, where he spent his teens in rehearsal studios learning precise, ensemble-driven choreography. He joined Molang Showbiz through the Prodigies program in 2024, at 21, and now splits his time between Molang’s Seoul creative studio and Los Angeles.
The program is designed to give young creatives real responsibility under close mentorship. For Kai, that meant stepping into major productions alongside senior creative directors, with a schedule paced so that he could learn each role properly rather than rush from job to job.
The craft
Kai’s specialty is translating stadium-scale spectacle into movement that still reads on camera. He choreographs with two audiences in mind: the person in the highest seat and the lens a few feet from the performer’s face.
- Rehearsals filmed from multiple angles to check every sightline
- Phrases built so that they read in silhouette from a distance and in detail up close
- Movement that serves the vocal first, so singers never trade breath for choreography
- Close work with lighting and staging teams from the first day of pre-production
“A stadium is just a lot of people each having a very personal night. I try to choreograph for one of them at a time.” — Kai Navarro
On stage
The Golden Zenith World Tour
As associate creative director on Aria Vane’s Golden Zenith World Tour, Kai helped shape a show staged in the round on a 360-degree kinetic platform. His task was to make sure no section of the audience watched the back of the show. He mapped each song so that Aria and the dancers rotate attention around the stage, and timed movement to the platform’s lifts and the 24-piece brass and strings section rising around them.
When the tour extended into stadiums, including Tokyo Dome and Wembley, he reworked the staging so gestures would carry across much larger spaces without losing the intimacy of the arena version. Every change is tested in rehearsal on a full-scale floor plan before it reaches the road crew.
Velvet Nocturne: Immersive Opera
For ‘Velvet Nocturne: Immersive Opera’, Kai is movement director on a 100-minute promenade production in which the audience moves through the space alongside the performers. He works closely with narrator-lead Maya Chen on her path through the crowd and choreographs dancers in couture costumes against a neo-classical electronic score.
“In promenade, the audience is part of the choreography. You design the space so they move without being told to.” — Kai Navarro
Mentorship & what’s next
Kai’s schedule is planned with his mentors in the Prodigies program, balancing the tour calendar against the opera’s limited runs in Berlin, Seoul, Milan and Los Angeles. Between commitments he keeps regular studio days in Seoul for his own choreographic work and for teaching younger dancers.
Mentorship runs in both directions. Senior creative directors review his staging plans and walk him through budgets, production schedules and crew logistics, the parts of the job that never appear on stage. In turn, he runs workshops for dancers who are just starting out. He is also documenting his Golden Zenith staging process for the touring team’s archive.
